Trout Unlimited (TU) takes care of the rivers, streams and clean water that trout, salmon and communities around the country depend on. POSITION SUMMARY

TU is hiring a motivated and highly capable person to grow and manage our river restoration program in Alaska. This position will primarily focus on restoration projects that improve trout and salmon habitat in the Tongass and Chugach National Forests of southeast and southcentral Alaska This position will work closely with our Forest Service partners on an initial suite of projects that will target fish passage improvements, floodplain and riparian restoration, and improvements to in-stream habitat.

A successful candidate will conduct work professionally and effectively, be flexible and innovative with program activities, serve as a public representative for TU, and maintain excellent working relationships with staff and project partners. The location for this position is in southeast or southcentral Alaska, with preference given for communities in close proximity to project sites. The Program Manager will be required to travel frequently to project sites and to partner meetings throughout the state.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Overall, this position will work closely with TU staff, Forest Service staff, and other partners to develop, fund and implement habitat restoration and reconnection projects on the Tongass and Chugach National Forests in a way that maximizes benefits for fish. Specifically, this position will:

• Conceptualize, develop, and implement habitat restoration and reconnection projects in designated Priority Waters.
• Manage restoration and reconnection projects from start to finish, including project planning, permitting, design, implementation, and monitoring.
• In coordination with the Alaska Program Director and Development staff, identify and secure project funding from government, corporate and philanthropic sources, which entails writing grant proposals and communicating directly with funders.
• Retain contractors through competitive bid processes, develop contractor scopes of work, and supervise contractors (engineers, construction contractor, etc.).
• Prepare grant and permit reports summarizing activities, deliverables, and ensuring regulatory compliance.
• Develop and maintain accurate budgets and manage projects within budgets.
• Collaborate with Forest Service and TU staff to communicate with and engage the public, and other partners and stakeholders, and build support for watershed-scale restoration.
• Cultivate successful partnerships to implement restoration projects.
• Participate as a member of TU’s Alaska program, helping to develop, coordinate and execute strategies and generally support the work of the Alaska program
• Participate in meetings of TU restoration staff to develop strategies, share experiences and lessons learned and advance TU’s organization-wide restoration goals

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Staff and leadership at TU understand that life outside of work is important to personal health, and we strive to create a healthy and family-friendly atmosphere. This is a full-time position with a generous benefits package. The starting salary range is $78,000 to $88,000 annually, depending on experience.

• Bachelor of Science degree; advanced degree (Master of Science or Physical Engineering degree) preferred.
• At least 5 years of experience working in the field of aquatic habitat restoration, natural resource project management, fluvial geomorphology, hydrologic engineering, civil engineering, or biological systems engineering
• Strong understanding of river restoration principles, methods, and practices, including understanding engineering design/construction concepts;
• Experience managing restoration projects from start to finish, including planning, design, construction and monitoring
• Experience working with federal and state permit processes related to aquatic restoration projects and in-water work.
• Experience writing, managing and reporting on federal grants.
• Experience overseeing remote worksites and managing field logistics off the road system preferred.
• Excellent time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
• Demonstrated success building and managing budgets.
• Demonstrated success leading and working within a team and building partnerships.
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong ability to creatively solve problems.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Experience using MS Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and GIS.

Work may at times be physically demanding. May require walking and maintaining balance on slippery surfaces and sloping, highly uneven stream banks, and in conditions of moderate streamflow; may require lifting, pulling, pushing, and carrying of field equipment over long distances. The position will also require multi-day travel to remote areas in Alaska by boat or small plane.
