Provide recommendations in preparing fields and planting, pest management, cultivating, harvesting, irrigating, and storing of a variety of crops. Conduct experiments or investigate field crop problems and develop new methods of growing crops to secure more efficient production, higher yield, and improved quality.

Essential Functions:

  • Develop, and recommend policies, procedures, and practices for the operation of crop production and ensure compliance with Threemile Canyon Farm’s standards for operation.
  • Confer with management team to develop budgets, plans and procedures for crop production.
  • Examine results of research to discover and enhance characteristics such as yield, quality, adaptation to specific soils or climates, and resistance to diseases and pests.
  • Study crop production to discover and develop best methods of planting, cultivation, harvesting, irrigating, improving crop quality, controlling pests, and effects of various climatic conditions on crops.
  • Inspect fields and observe growing plants and harvested crop to determine work requirements such as fertilizing, cultivating, spraying, thinning, weeding, irrigating, harvesting, and drying, according to time of year and condition of soil, plants, and crops.
  • Work with management team to plan, develop, and implement policies, procedures, and practices for the waste management of approximately 36,000 dairy cows and 40,000 replacement heifers following agronomic standards. Maintain compliance with and report to state agencies.
  • Inspect work performed, observe equipment performance, ascertain condition of crop, and perform related duties to verify worker adherence to instructions.
  • Supervise a team of employees in support of Threemile Canyon Farm’s operations, including interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems; assisting employees in career growth and development.
  • Determine the number of and kind of workers needed to perform required work and schedule activities.
  • Train workers in work procedures, safety policies, and use of machinery and tools.
  • Suggest changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of work crew.

Secondary Functions:

  • Drive and operate farm machinery.
  • Examine machinery to ascertain maintenance, repair, and replacement requirements, and supervise workers engaged in machinery-maintenance activities.

Scope and Accountability:

  • Frequently, incumbent's decisions and actions strongly impact the company's revenue or operations. Decisions and actions have a significant impact on reputation, and/or customer satisfaction.
  • Incumbent makes recommendations, gives direction to others, and performs work independently or with minimal supervision.
  • Work under established guidelines and controls including Corporate Social Responsibility Operating procedures, WPS, OR-OSHA, ODA.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture or related field.
  • Current Private Pesticide Applicator License or ability to obtain within 3 months.
  • 5+ years of experience with cultivating crops or previous general farm experience. Previous supervisory or management experience required.
  • Strong knowledge of crop cultivation and harvesting including proper irrigation techniques.
  • Knowledge of techniques and equipment for planting, growing, and harvesting crops for consumption, including storage and handling techniques.
  • Knowledge in the uses of pesticides and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods. Strong knowledge of regulations associated with the use of pesticides.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Work safely with the use of chemicals in applying pesticides to crops and using general farm equipment.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills. Solid active listening skills.
  • Bilingual skills (English and Spanish) preferred.
  • Able to exemplify safe work techniques and train staff to keep all workers safe from harm. Knowledge of first aide preferred.
  • Able to lead, motivate and develop staff; participate in a team environment.

Work Environment:

  • Majority of work is outdoors with some exposure to extreme weather conditions.
  • Exposure to poisonous chemicals through the application of pesticides.
  • Stand, walk, bend, stretch, and reach with arms for up to 10 hours.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Substantial overtime and ability to work weekends is required during the harvest; on-call during seasonable times. Some travel required.
