Position Summary:

The Emergency Service Coordinator will perform all non-clinical services related to registration/discharge of a patient and their records. This position is also responsible for triaging all incoming calls to the department, and triage all calls to the call bell system. This position is responsible for billing preparation, and other processes associated with the patients and their associated medical records on an emergency basis, with variable patient flow and unscheduled arrivals. The ESC assists patients and physicians requesting services with JHMI. The position requires primary patient/family contact in the Adult Emergency Department to ascertain appropriate demographic information, insurance coverage and to initiate application for other sources of funding.

Education:

Work requires a level of knowledge in health care administration. Diploma/Certificate/GED required

Licensure/Certification:

Successful completion of department training program and all related competency assessments.

Work Experience:

6 months-1 year of related experience required.

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Medical and insurance terminology and an excellent command of English grammar and spelling, both written and verbal. Requires working knowledge in medical insurance plans, billing and regulations, especially managed care plans, applicable to Inpatient and Outpatient Care and revenue and procedure code assignment; familiar with multiple payers’ insurance verification guidelines. Must be able to obtain payer specific details, as necessary to ensure accurate coordination of benefits.
  • Requires excellent verbal communications, telephone manners, interviewing and interpersonal skills to interact with patients, families, members of the health care team and external agencies. Ability to demonstrate and convey a favorable image of the organization and to conform to proper standards of professional dress, attitude, demeanor. Requires proficiency in PC usage and keyboard; working knowledge of spreadsheet applications (i.e. Excel) is preferable. Ability to perform with accuracy and attention to detail in a variable and time-sensitive environment. Ability to lead a team.
