Job description
Walnut Hill School for the Arts seeks an adjunct voice instructor specializing in Musical Theater vocal technique for high school students beginning January 27th or sooner. Base qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance or Musical Theater or the equivalent experience, at least three years teaching experience, and some professional performance credits.

Additional training in Vocal Pedagogy strongly preferred. Ability to teach healthy vocal technique from belting to traditional golden-age vocalism is a must; Contemporary Commercial vocal styles are a plus. Must offer understanding and encouragement to busy, ambitious students, while helping them improve technical skill, discipline, preparation, artistry and confidence.

Candidates should be excellent colleagues who teach and collaborate with enthusiasm and integrity. Lessons are generally conducted during school hours between 9am and 6pm Monday-Friday. Specific teaching days and hours will be scheduled at the start of each semester, accounting for student and teacher availability.


Responsibilities Include:

  • Weekly Private Voice Lessons (50 minutes) for 4 - 12 students, depending on enrollment;
  • Preparing students for auditions and performances on campus and beyond;
  • Supporting specific role and repertoire preparation as assigned by their Arts Program faculty;
  • Assigning appropriate repertoire in a range of vocal styles including classical, golden age, contemporary music theater, pop and other commercial styles, depending on students' needs, goals and interests;
  • Helping students maintain or achieve vocal health (injury prevention as well as rehabilitation practice), as well as being attuned to the general well-being of the student;
  • Communicating regularly with Head of Voice and/or Program Director or Advisor about student progress or student concerns;
  • Occasional voice faculty meetings and HR trainings (paid time); and
  • Showing student support by attending their performances whenever possible.


Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance or Musical Theater or equivalent experience;
  • 3+ years teaching experience (independent or institutional);
  • Demonstrated excellence working with high school students and attuned to their specific developmental needs;
  • Must be well-versed in the specific skills required for singing various music styles healthily and authentically;
  • Must have appropriate piano skills to support vocalizing and repertoire learning;
  • Ability to teach students ranging in experience from beginner to advanced with equity - students of any level should expect to grow and improve with this instruction;
  • Possess cultural competence in working with diverse populations;
  • Ability to balance the pursuit of excellence with compassion for each individual;
  • Commitment to working in and fostering an inclusive community;
  • Share an educational and artistic vision that aligns with the core principles of Walnut Hill;
  • Positive attitude and passion for teaching and learning; toxicity such as competitiveness, or disparaging colleagues or students in the community or beyond, is not tolerated;
  • Must be reliable and professional;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; and
  • COVID-19 vaccination with Pfizer or Moderna booster required.

Rate of Pay:

This is an hourly, adjunct position.

Pay rate of $61.32 per lesson.

Physical Demands:

Physical demands include dexterity for department specific tools and equipment, and office machine and supply operation including but not limited to: writing, typing, using electronic devices, computer, phone, calculator, copy machine, fax machine, and printers. Ability and dexterity to practice and demonstrate your artistic discipline. Stooping, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, and sitting or standing for extended periods of time are common. Ability to communicate effectively and clearly through language and physical demonstration required.
