Department Description

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Denver is a vibrant department of six productive, internationally recognized scholar-teachers who have attracted a growing cadre of undergraduate majors, double majors and graduate students in the College of Arts, Humanities, & Social Sciences (CAHSS). The department is strongly committed to building a diverse and inclusive educational environment, in full accord with the value that DU places on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Ours is a high-profile department in the oldest independent university in the Rocky Mountain region, which describes itself as a private university dedicated to the public good. Position Summary

The Department of Philosophy invites applications for adjuncts to teach a total of up to five (5) undergraduate and/or undergraduate/MA level courses in the Spring Quarter of 2023 which begins Monday, March 27.

Course topics are open for discussion with a preference for those related to sociology, politics, justice, diversity/equity/inclusion, and introductions to philosophy. Examples include:

  • Philosophy of Religion
  • Environmental Ethics
  • Philosophy of Race
  • Philosophy of Law
  • Social and Political Philosophy
  • Introduction to Philosophy

The Department is particularly interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to our College’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Essential Functions

  • Teach one or more courses in a ten-week quarter.
  • Teach in-person, on campus courses meeting twice per week.
  • Delineate distinct readings and assignment requirements for undergraduate and MA students.
  • Hold weekly office hours.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the field (subject matter expertise).
  • Knowledge of contemporary pedagogical approaches and philosophies.
  • Ability to use Canvas.
  • Ability to provide feedback to students in a timely manner.
  • Commitment to utilizing and engaging a diverse range of perspectives, scholars, approaches, and resources in teaching materials and practices.

Required Qualifications

  • For undergraduate only courses, a completed MA prior to appointment (no exceptions). Degree may be from Philosophy or any relevant field with Philosophy training.
  • For undergraduate/MA courses, a completed Ph.D. prior to appointment (no exceptions). Degree may be from Philosophy or any relevant field with Philosophy training.
  • Proven record of successful teaching experience during and/or after one’s graduate training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completed Ph.D. prior to appointment. Degree may be from Philosophy or any relevant field with Philosophy training.
  • Theoretical training that includes familiarity with a diverse range of theorists.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Course Rate

The course rate will be $4,500 per course.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
