JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Accountant

Reports to: Chief Financial Officer

General Summary: Supports the financial activities of the Finance Office.

Primary Responsibilities

Financial:

  • Account Reconciliations
  • Prepare month-end and year-end reconciliations as assigned by supervisor
  • Assessments
  • Prepare and send monthly and annual statements to parishes, update status report on website, follow up on missing reports, main contact for parishes with questions/issues. Maintain all related databases and forms.
  • Payroll/Benefits Administration
  • Prepare semi-monthly payroll for Diocesan staff. Update payroll data as needed. Primary contact with payroll vendor. Administration of Church Pension Group benefits, supplemental benefits, health savings account withholdings and employer payments, retirement plan withholdings and employer payments. Provide assistance and/or support to parishes for benefit administration. Workers compensation payments and expense accruals.
  • Gifts
  • Review and post all gift entries and pledges for the Diocese. Prepare monthly reconciliation for all gifts. Prepare monthly deposit logs for contributions received. Works with the Development Office staff on gift entry issues. Manages the year-end process for tax acknowledgement letters to donors.
  • Bellwether Farm
  • Coordinate invoicing and revenue recognition between Financial Edge and Campwise software systems. Prepare/manage cash receipts and deposit applications to event invoices. Assist Bellwether staff with accounting, payroll, and benefit questions/issues. Maintain reconciliations of Accounts Receivable and Event Deposits.
  • Other
  • Prepare all accounts payable check requests for the Finance Office.
  • Backup CFO on Joint Investment Fund accounting and administration.
  • Maintain Finance Office website page and parish resources.
  • Prepare, send and reconcile monthly invoices for loans and grants, and other items as needed.
  • Make cash deposits as received.
  • Prepare accounting journal entries for beneficial trusts each quarter.

Supervisory Responsibilities

None

Working Hours

Standard hours are 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. This is an hourly support staff position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting required.
  • Ability to work independently with general supervision.
  • Detailed knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, including accruals, account reconciliations, and financial statements.
  • Strong detail orientation, self-starter; ability to handle multiple projects and priorities.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

General office environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require the employee to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
