This position is a Leave Replacement 1.0 FTE (7.5hrs) from January 10, 2023 - April 19, 2023.

Covington is a whole-school Title I elementary school with about 500 students located in the city of Covington six miles east of downtown Kent. It serves a diverse community and offers varied instructional strategies for each student customized to his or her learning needs. As a tiered intervention school, Covington offers a strong academic program with emphasis on basic skills and rich opportunities in the arts and physical education. In support of the classroom teacher there are full-time music and physical education specialists as well academic interventionists and a full time library paraeducator. An extensive special education department with Integrated Programs, Support Center, and an ECE program for our 3 – 5 year old students with disabilities is an integral part of the school. The ECE program includes peer models. We currently offer an after-school intervention program entitled DAWG Pack for third through sixth grade students needing an additional dose of instruction to close the achievement gaps in reading and math and rotate participation at three intervals throughout the year. Title I and LAP programs also provide support to students that need additional time and help to learn. Covington enjoys a strong, cooperative relationship with the community, including a very active PTA and parent volunteer program.


Basic Function:

Under the direction of the Principal, the Academic Intervention Teacher assists in the students’ adjustment and integration within the general educational setting. The Academic Intervention Teacher ensures contact with students, families, school staff, and administrators via individual, group, and family meetings to resolve student, home, and school-based academic challenges and facilitate the educational process.


The Academic Intervention Teacher works directly with student, teachers, and support staff to provide classroom intervention in grades K-12. The Academic Intervention Teacher will be responsible for collaborating with classroom teachers to plan lessons in a variety of subject areas (math, health, social studies, science, etc.). The Academic Intervention Teacher will teach in large and small groups of students within the regular classroom setting and provide additional individual and group interventions to students.


REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  • Assists the principal in achieving school and district objectives and carrying out policies established by the Board of Directors in Successfully Preparing All Students for Their Futures.
  • Works with teachers and school/district staff to develop instructional and academic programs to meet the individual learning needs of students; implements alternative academic modification techniques that meet individual student needs, assists in developing accommodations and supports for successful inclusion in general education.
  • Provides direct individual and/or group academic services to students and families.
  • Consults, assists, and meets with school or district administrators, teacher teams, individual teachers, support staff, and outside agency personnel (e.g., tutors) in management of students displaying academic challenges.
  • Maintains appropriate and timely student records and other reports using designated district computer systems.
  • Assesses, determines, and interprets current levels of academic achievement for students and assists with achievement assessments.
  • Plans, develops, and monitors academic support programs carried out by non-endorsed certificated staff and classified staff.
  • Works collaboratively with administrators, program teachers, classroom teachers, paraeducators, and other staff involved with students, outside agency personnel (e.g., tutors), and others.
  • Works closely with parents/guardians to develop a strong home-school partnership.
  • Provides academic intervention during school hours.
  • Provides needed training on social, academic assessment and instructional strategy modification, classroom management and team building to school and district staff and parents/guardians.
  • Provides information to staff and families on a variety of academic related topics to support students’’ educational programming.
  • Assists in coordination of policies/programs that promote parent/guardian education and parent/guardian, student, and community collaboration is support of district initiatives.
  • Collaborates with Inclusive Education Services, Health Services, and Instructional Services to ensure a comprehensive and coherent continuum of services for students.
  • Maintains professional competency by attending district and other staff development conferences and workshops.
  • Communicates regularly with colleagues, administrators, other district staff, and parents in a positive and constructive manner.
  • Maintains order in the classroom and in the building.
  • Maintains adequate and careful records as required by the principal and district.
  • Provides for the care of school property and appropriate use of supplies, equipment, and utilities.

  • Participates in required district-level, school site, and department level meetings.
  • Serves on committees and works on special projects.

  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Washington Multiple Subject or Single-Subject Teaching Credential
  • Advanced training in curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in related field.
  • Bilingual (oral and written).
  • Proven successful experience in working with students requiring academic supports.
  • Proven successful experience teaching in urban public education.
  • Proven successful experience in an ethnically diverse public school district.
  • Proven successful experience in working and learning in a Professional Learning Community.
