Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead regular discussion groups for first-year law students;
  • Attend weekly doctrinal lectures;
  • Attend a minimum of two mandatory PIC Group Leadership Training sessions during the semester;
  • Review the PIC group lesson plan and materials each week;
  • Provide one-on-one advising on an as-needed basis; and
  • Check in with Academic Achievement program managers on a regular basis about group attendance, class management, and other issues as required.

Qualifications and/or Experience:

  • Current 2L/3L/4L at GGU School of Law;
  • Strong leadership and communication skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with students, staff, and faculty;
  • Passionate about helping and mentoring first-year law students;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate judgment when interfacing with students, staff, and faculty; and
  • Strong interest in and command of the doctrinal subject the PIC groups are linked to.

About the Practice Intensive Course (PIC) Program:

PIC stands for “Practice Intensive Course.” First-year doctrinal classes designated as PIC courses (Torts in the fall for both full-time students, and Civil Procedure II in the spring for full-time students) provide students the opportunity to hone their academic skills in a small group setting led by an upper-division Group Leader selected and trained by Academic Achievement. Academic Achievement works with doctrinal faculty to develop the curricula and the practice problems used in the groups. Students learn how to master the law through a process of demonstration, discussion, practice, and feedback. The skills they attain in the groups are applicable in all of their courses.

By participating in the rigorous PIC Program, Group Leaders have the unique opportunity to develop their communication and leadership skills by teaching and being responsible for their own group of students. The PIC Group Leadership Training is the only training program of its kind at GGU Law, covering group management, communication, conflict resolution, and group facilitation skills. Having gone through the program, Group Leaders often go on to other leadership roles both inside and outside of GGU Law. Additionally, by having to teach skills using doctrinal law, Group Leaders further their own substantive and skills mastery, thereby giving them an early start in bar preparation.

How to Apply:

  • Contact Professor Varanini (hvaranini@ggu.edu) for a PIC Group Leader application. Fill out the PIC Group Leader application and return it to Professor Varanini along with a current resume; and
  • Go to http:///www.ggu.edu/jobs and fill out the online job application.

To apply: Please go to http://www.ggu.edu/jobs and submit an application, letter of interest, and a resume.

In applying for a position, candidates sign a consent authorizing a broader inquiry which may include reference checks, a motor vehicle check, and a third party background check.
