San Miguel and West Montrose Counties encompass the San Miguel River Basin (SMB), which has a population of approximately 10,000 The major towns include Telluride, Placerville, Norwood, Nucla, and Naturita. The office for this position is located in the San Miguel CSU Extension office in Norwood, Colorado. The San Miguel Basin is surrounded by mountains with elevations ranging from 5,000 ft. to 14,246 ft. Historically the economy has been based on agriculture, tourism, and mining. Agriculture is primarily beef production on ranches growing grain and hay and using public land for grazing. However, an influx of new residents has prompted growth in hobby farms and markets and home gardening. There is also a dynamic recreational economy that is centered on the Telluride Ski Area as well as west end trails. This interface between agriculture/mining and recreation has caused complex land use and environmental issues. Position Summary
To provide leadership and support to the 4-H youth development program in the San Miguel Basin and serve as part of the 4-H Youth Development team in the San Miguel Basin. This position will be officed and based out of the CSU Extension Office in Norwood CO. The program associate will facilitate communication between diverse groups who support the 4-H program and encourage volunteer leadership development opportunities for both youth and adults involved in the 4-H program. The 4-H program currently has 60 youth participants and 6 volunteers.
This individual works under the guidance and supervision of the San Miguel Basin CSU Extension Director. This individual will also work under the programmatic guidance of the State 4-H Office and will regularly collaborate with other Extension staff across program and county lines as well as actively participate on State 4-H teams and committees.

Required Job Qualifications
  • Completed bachelor’s degree.
  • Ability to communicate through teaching, public speaking/presentation and writing as demonstrated through application materials and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working with people as individuals and in groups; ability to forge equitable partnerships with other professionals and/or organizations.
  • Demonstrated use of technology in communication and/or delivering educational programs.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Have three or more years of any combination of education, training and experience in the broad field of animal science.
  • Experience in raising livestock, animal husbandry, and/or animal health.
  • Evidence of drive and initiative. Must be a self-starter.
  • Personal and/or professional commitment to diversity as demonstrated by persistent effort, active planning, allocation of resources and/or accountability for diversity outcomes
  • Ability to speak Spanish.

  • Travel to and participate in professional development, evening and weekend events and periodic activities requiring overnight stays.
  • Seek out and manage external funding, personnel, and in-kind resources to support programming efforts.

  • As part of the 4-H team, provide leadership and support for engaging a broad range of stakeholders through various 4-H and local youth development advisory councils and committees in the work of identifying and addressing priority youth development needs.
  • Assure compliance with civil rights and affirmative action policies, including reaching out to underserved and underrepresented audiences.
