Reports To: Director of the School

About CSS: Cold Spring School is an independent school located in New Haven, Connecticut, that serves children preschool through sixth grade from New Haven and surrounding areas. The Upper Elementary Program at Cold Spring School provides children with a rich, challenging academic program grounded in meaningful content and structured around the development of critical thinking skills. Job Description: We are looking for an upper-elementary Head Teacher for our 4th and 5th grade multi-grade classroom for the ‘23-24 school year. Classes at Cold Spring School, which have no more than 22 children, have two full-time teachers, a Head
Teacher and an Associate Teacher. Classrooms are designed to provide a warm learning environment that nurtures student-led inquiry and project-based learning.

Minimum Qualifications:
● Bachelor’s Degree in education, human services, social work, sociology, or a related field.
● 2+ years of experience teaching in a K-8 school setting (public or private/independent).

Skills and Abilities:
● Strong skill sets in literacy, mathematics, social studies, and meeting the social and emotional needs of children
● Strong understanding of what equity looks like within a classroom setting; particularly understanding the importance of how small group work, differentiation, curricular content, and communication between students and families is equity-centered

● Works to build collaborative relationships with other grade level teachers
● Ability to oversee and plan curriculum, utilizing benchmarks and student assessments to drive instruction
● Familiarity with using technologies such as gmail, google slide, google docs, and a commitment to learning new ones that will benefit communication to students and families
● Comfortable with parent collaboration and communication

Key Responsibilities:
An ideal Cold Spring educator responds to all aspects of the child, understanding that children’s emotional lives are inseparable from their learning. We seek a candidate who is committed to the lifelong love of learning and who models and emphasizes curiosity, openness, flexibility, empathy, respect, and compassion in the classroom.

● Teach a class of up to 22 students and oversee all aspects of curriculum planning, development and implementation in: math, reading, writing, spelling and thematic studies.

● Partner with and guide the Associate Teacher to teach small, grade-level groups in math, reading and writing.

● Design curriculum based on thematic studies, teach research skills, and include the curiosities and questions of the children in the learning process

● Regularly assess children in academic areas, informally and formally, and use the data to inform instruction and differentiation

● Modify instruction, routines, expectations for any child needing additional learning and social/emotional support and follow through with any academic/behavior plans

● Keep careful anecdotal and assessment records and use them to write two accurate, comprehensive formal progress reports.

● Engage in ongoing communication with parents/guardians along with two formal parent conferences during the school year

● Provide mentorship to an Associate Teacher.
● Collaborate regularly with grade-level classroom teachers, as well as Special Area teachers.
● Attend all faculty meetings and participate in professional development learning opportunities

Salary/Benefits:
The base salary is $45,000 for a candidate who meets the minimum qualifications. Candidates who exceed the minimum qualifications will have their salary commensurate with years of experience. Cold
