TITLE: Paraprofessional

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Educator License with Stipulations endorsed for Paraprofessional in the state of Illinois.

• 30 semester hours from a NCATE college or university preferred.
• Background with children experiences helpful, but not required.
• Other qualifications as the administration may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO: Teacher assigned, and Director of Special Education/Designee

JOB GOAL: To assist the teacher with classroom and student needs that will allow students to benefit from program goals and objectives.

CLASSROOM RESPONSBILITIES:

1. Administer, score, and record such achievement and diagnostic tools as the teacher recommends for individual students.

2. Work with individual students or small/large groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.

3. Assist the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing concepts, or skills based on an understanding of individual students, their needs, interest and abilities.

4. Construct classroom materials and/or worksheets related to academic areas.

5. Operate and care for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.

6. Help students’ master equipment or instructional materials assigned by teacher.

7. Distribute and collect workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction.

8. Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher.

9. Assist with the supervision of students in all school directed activities.

10. The Paraprofessional will display positive communication skills to enhance good classroom relationships with students and teacher.

11. Keep bulletin board and other classroom learning displays up-to-date, when applicable.

12. Assist with such small/large group activities such as drill work, reading aloud, and story telling.

13. Develop communication skills with students.

14. Assist students in the library or media center, when applicable.

15. Check notebooks, correct papers, and supervise testing and make-up work as assigned by the teacher.

16. Check and records student attendance.

17. Collect and record collection of money.

18. Help students with their clothing, when applicable.

19. Assist with lunch, snack, and cleanup routines.

20. Assist with wash-up and toilet routines, when applicable.

21. Alert teacher to special information about an individual student, pertaining to the school program.

22. Serve as a source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the teacher.

23. Lifting and transferring of students as needed/necessary.

24. Assist in implementing Behavior Intervention Plans under the supervision of the teacher.

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers.

2. Participate in required meetings and inservice training programs, as assigned.

3. Communicate with appropriate school personnel on needs of students.

4. Develop his/her own professional growth through reading, workshops, inservices,

conferences, and/or advanced coursework.

5. Perform other duties, as necessary, to provide Paraprofessional services as assigned by the Director of Special Education.'
