This is an AmeriCorps national service position. It is contingent on funding and open until filled. Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group is dedicated to restoring Skagit salmon for future generations. Pacific salmon are in decline in many of their former strongholds, affecting humans, orcas, and many other links in the food chain. By engaging community members of all ages, we raise awareness and foster a stewardship ethic. Our Habitat Restoration Associate will manage day-to-day operations in our native plant nursery, conduct spawner surveys to document salmon use at restoration sites, and lead volunteer work parties at planting sites and nursery. In partnership with SFEG staff, interns, other WSC members, and volunteers, help to lead the way toward salmon habitat restoration and community involvement. Ideal candidates have experience with plant propagation and identification, are comfortable being outdoors for long periods of time in inclement weather, and have a background in or interest in learning stream and salmon ecology. Interviews are anticipated to begin in mid April and continue until position is filled.
Member Duties : Lead and manage volunteers and interns in vegetation monitoring and spawner surveys programs; Enter and manage data from spawner surveys, vegetation monitoring, and riparian planting database; Assist in planning and leading Make a Difference Day and Earth Day celebration and volunteer events; Manage day-to-day tasks of native plant nursery, including work parties, irrigation, cleaning, weeding, maintaining beds, composting, and minor structural fixes; Lead volunteers and school groups in propagation workshops, maintenance work parties, nursery maintenance, and potting native bare root plants for future planting; Assist with planning, leading, and implementing restoration projects at sites where SFEG seeks to improve riparian habitat and ecological function; Office tasks specific to the Restoration Associate, including data entry, management, and analysis, ArcGIS mapping, and creation of fliers or save-the-dates.
